Kings Mountain, Oct. 7, 2005. 225th Anniversary. Another major victory of Whigs (Patriots) over Tories (Loyalists). A composite force of backwoods militia from North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia won the 1780 battle atop Kings Mountain near Charlotte, but in South Carolina. Memorial and wreath presentations by SAR, DAR, and C.A.R.. 30 Georgians commanded by Major William Candler joined the overmountain men on Oct. 5th and were attached to Colonel Williams for the duration. The projected 30-man Georgia Society Color Guard will be commanded by Paul Prescott. The Overmountain Victory Trail Association marchers will include a GASSAR contingent under Charlie Newcomer with an arrival ceremony at 3:00 P.M. Morning ceremony will be spoonsored by the NCSSAR; afternoon ceremony by the OMVTA and both in coordination with the National Park Service.
